Transforming Timbers

With enough skill, time or dogged determination you can build almost anything out of wood.

A shelf. A fence. A shed. A house. A skyscraper.

And given how readily it's available, quickly replenished, biodegradable, eco-friendly and non-toxic...why wouldn't you?

Our workshop is ready and waiting for new and exciting projects. We have made simple shelves and bench slats to replace damaged ones. We make gates everyday in whatever size and design you want. We make kits to build enormous chicken units to house thousands of chickens. We have now decided to branch out into garden furniture and have created a stunning picnic bench to seat 8 and stores to house your unsightly wheelie bins.

What could we make for you?
Give us a call or e-mail and see if we can help with your next project.

Environmentally Friendly?

With recent emphasis on changing our habits to be more 'environmentlly conscious' we have to ask the question, is timber environmentally friendly?

We have all read the horror stories surrounding deforestation and how that can decimate the wildlife and the land itself with long-lasting impact and many areas unable to recover, but with responsible management of forests we can actually have a positive impact on the climate.

Trees absorb more carbon dioxide as young growing trees. As they age, grow and mature the absorption rate decreases. So by harvesting the mature trees and planting young trees you maintain the highest rate of absorption.

Did you know: One cubic meter of wood absorbs one tonne of carbon dioxide.

But what about using it in buildings?

Currently, timber framed houses account for 27% of all new builds in the UK.
It is a safe material to handle, it's non-toxic and does not break down into environmentally damaging materials. It's more naturally insulating so less central heating is required. It allows for off site manufacture of elements which reduces the amount of waste produced.

Quick tangent:
It can also be safer than steel structures in cases of fire. Steel distorts and fails quickly under heat, making roof collapse a real danger early on in a fire situation. Timber beams will slowly burn without giving way for a long time.

So what is FSC and PEFC?!

Pennymoor Timber is registered as FSC and PEFC certified.
But what does that actually mean?

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international non-profit, multi-stakeholder organization established in 1993 to promote responsible management of the world’s forests.

PEFC describes itself as an international organisation dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management (SFM) through independent third party certification.

They essentially do the same job, ensuring forests are managed in such a way that they have no effect on ecological, social and economic functions at local, national and global levels. Proper management is essential to ensure society's demands don't compromise the resource.

PEFC and FSC also have the interests of indingenoius people, local communities and ecological biodiversity within their regulations and promote fair pay, gender equality and human rights.

The UK is the largest importer of FSC certified timber.
